Thanks for raising this point. I feel that we must identify what assay
we are using - in Leeds we do this for troponin and all tumour markers.
Troponin I is not an analyte for which comparison can be made between
methods. Indeed until recently there has been a 10 fold difference
between different methods. How are busy clinicians supposed to be able
to cope if we don't tell them there is a difference between methods. You
only need to speak to on-call registrars who rotate between hospitals in
the same city with different methods to find out how confused they are.
If we believe standardisation is a clinical issue as opposed to an
eclectic issue that only excites laboratory purists then you have to
enlist help and education is a good start.

When reporting TnI, do your lab state the method/manufacturer on the
reports e.g TnI ultra(Siemens), TnI (Abbott) ....etc. I would be
interested to know the views of the mailbase panel.
