LIBRARY COLLECTIONS IN SWAHILI
At the British Library, we have a range of material in Swahili: books
(mainly fiction, but some non-fiction including some politics and history),
manuscripts, and extensive sound collections (mainly music). We're
interested in finding out more about public libraries' holdings of Swahili-
language material. Our impression so far is that very little is held, but
we'd be very interested in anything that contradicts this. We'd also like
to know whether public libraries have noticed a demand for material in
Swahili. If anyone can offer any information, we'd be most grateful if you
would contact us (email address below).
On 4th December we'll be holding an event showcasing our Swahili-language
collections. We'd be delighted to hear from anyone in the library world who
might be interested in coming, or who would be able to put us in touch with
Swahili-speakers who might be interested. The target audience for the event
is academics, researchers, school teachers, 'intellectuals' (broadly
interpreted), librarians (public libraries and university libraries),
musicians/performers, and people with a strong interest in Swahili
literature and/or music.
The event is by invitation only, and advance registration is necessary, so
please contact us if you're interested. (Please note that the British
Library doesn't acquire materials for basic education, manuals or
handbooks; the focus of the event will be on Swahili literature and music.)
