Dear Andrew,
I am away from my desk at present, but I am fairly sure that the ORG
notes on "The Mother Lodge" are an example of obscurity, making me
wish once again that the missing notes for Volume 2 could be found.
If I remember rightly, ORG confirms that the poem is dated 1894 in the
Sussex Edition, but lists it as written on May 2nd 1895. This memory
is fairly certain, because Peter Keating used it as an example of the
questionable reliability of ORG dates generally, when we were
discussing that aspect of the NRG.
Anyway, my own database gives first publication in the Pall Mall
Gazette and the Pall Mall Budget in 1895 - May 9th for both, I think.
This means that it was published along with "The Men that fought at
Minden", and makes the ORG date for writing even shakier.
Regarding the visit to Vermont by ACD, (the skis, etc.) I will email
again when I return from work.
Regards,
John
