The garment in question appears to be a _palliolum_ (a relatively narrow shawl so called because it was thought of as a smaller version of the outer wrap called a _palla_). The one held by Cominia (the lady to Januarius' left) is more plainly visible than the one apparently worn by the child Nicatiola. Both are of the same design (fringed with a panel towards each end). The later third-century figure known as La Velata in the Roman cemetery of Priscilla is wearing one over her head:
