SUPPORTING TEENAGERS THROUGH PUBLIC LIBRARIES
15 November 2007, London
Library provision for teenagers is often regarded as problematic. Yet many library authorities have established excellent relationships with teenagers and are delivering services to them that are relevant, innovative and highly valued. Youth Matters, Fulfilling Their Potential and the 2006 LASER research study of 14-35 year olds for the future development of public libraries provide important tools for improvement. This practical course will explore these and many more ways to reach this challenging audience.
BENEFITS OF ATTENDING
Participants will consider the interface between teenagers and public libraries, share good practice, and identify methods to enhance library provision to teenagers.
BY THE END OF THE EVENT PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE:
* broadened their understanding of teenagers and their needs and expectations
* gained more awareness of current legislation, reports and initiatives and their implications
* analysed the strengths and weaknesses of current teenage provision
* identified strategies for meeting teenagers' needs effectively and encouraging library use
* explored communication and behaviour
* discussed resources and their exploitation
* gained more confidence with this age group
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Managers of children's and young people's library services, children's librarians, other public library staff.
