It looks to me as if the horseman is dismounting, and carrying in one hand one of the "bird-
like" things that the man in front is holding two of. I'm not convinced that the "bird-like" things
are really birds, but if they are, then maybe they are hawks. That would make the scene
secular in at least literal meaning. Is there not a mounted noble holding a hawk in one of the
early Cistercian illuminated manuscripts?
