School of GeoSciences
University of Edinburgh
Research Associate in Active Tectonics and Cosmogenic Isotope Analysis
The successful candidate will contribute to a 3 year programme involving
surface exposure dating of active normal faults in the central Italian
Apennines to understand fault interaction and its effect on the
earthquake cycle. As part of a collaborative research team you will be
primarily responsible for sampling active faults, preparing the samples
in the Cosmogenic Nuclide Laboratory at Edinburgh University,
collaborating with staff at the Accelerator Mass Spectrometer Facility
at SUERC (East Kilbride) to measure 36-Cl concentrations, plus modelling
and interpreting the results in terms of fault slip histories
and thus fault interactions. The project will be based at Edinburgh
University and will involve several visits to the Italian Apennines to
conduct field work. A PhD or equivalent in active tectonics, structural
geology, or relevant areas of geochemistry, with strong quantitative
skills, is essential. Knowledge of isotope geoscience and practical lab
experience would be advantageous.
The post is for up to 35 months, and is available from 1st November 2007.
Salary in the range UE07 £27,466 - £32,796 p.a.
Closing date 28th September 2007
