I agree with what has been said previously regarding allowing the students to see their Originality Reports as it reinforces the learning process. However at RGU we use the Turnitin system as Diagnostic tool whereby as a "rule of thumb" the academics create Revision assessments at the same time as the initial assessments which allows the students to submit their work and make any amendments prior to final submission. We have found that this encourages our students to ensure they have referenced their work correctly and learn from their mistakes.
We do however have another school who use the system specifically to "catch" those students who are plagiarising and this does increase the stress levels of these students to ensure their work is perfect prior to submission (these students DO NOT see their Originality Report). I suppose it depends on what your institution wants to achieve out of this system.
I personally believe that it should be used as a learning tool as there is nothing, (so far) that can cut out plagiarism completely.

Most definitely students should be able to see and change their reports
prior to submission, this is the strength of the learning. What would
be the point of seeing plagiarism and not being able to do anything
about it?

I agree with David and Suzanne, but I'd like to know whether others allow students to make changes once they have seen their report, prior to final submission (either using the Revision Assignment facility or using the overwrite facility)?
I wonder whether seeing the originality report without being able to do anything about it can sometimes cause students to panic. Even given explanation, I think that students sometimes misunderstand what the OR is telling them, particularly if they haven't used Turnitin before.

I agree with Suzanne, we've been looking at the system in that context. When a student can see their work on-screen it re-enforces the need to practice and improve. It's also a really good opportunity to review plagiarism rules in practical context (either as a class or for individual students).

I think the best and most powerful way for students to learn about
plagiarism is to see their own work and to have to figure out from their
originality reports what is correct and what is not. It is also a good
opportunity for students to help each other in understanding how not to
plagiarise by sharing their reports. We do this as a matter of policy
at the University of Newcastle, Australia. It is also very good for Phd
students.

1) how many people restrict the students view of originality reports
and
if you do is it for all assignments or just their final assignment.
