ASSISTANT PROFESSORSHIP IN MUSICOLOGY, UNIVERSITEIT UTRECHT

Faculty of Humanities, Department of Media and Culture Studies

The Faculty of Humanities at Utrecht University is broadly based, interdisciplinary and internationally oriented. The Faculty offers courses and conducts research in the languages and cultures of Western and Southern Europe, history, the fine arts, philosophy, theology, cultural as well as communications and information studies.

Teaching

The Department of Media and Culture Studies houses the BA programmes in Theatre, Film and Television Studies, Communication & Information Sciences and Musicology, as well as MA programmes in Film and Television Studies, Theatre Studies, New Media and Digital Culture, Gender Studies, Arts Policy and Management, and Musicology. For more information, please go to www.let.uu.nl and www.let.uu.nl/muziekwetenschap.

You will be working in a multidisciplinary environment, joining a team of young, intellectually adventurous scholars in a stimulating and collegial atmosphere. All Department members may be assigned a range of tasks.

Research

Musicological research at Utrecht falls under the aegis of the Research Group Musicology, as do the research postgraduate programmes in the field (Research MA and PhD in Musicology). The Research Group operates within the Research Institute for History and Culture (OGC), in close collaboration with the Graduate School of the Humanities. Utrecht Musicology actively strives to be at the forefront of the intellectual frontier while maintaining its connection to the traditions of musicological research. Current hallmarks include late medieval music from the 13th to the early 15th century; Dutch song culture from the Middle Ages to the present; Franco-Flemish polyphony of the Renaissance; music in the culture of the Italian, German, and Dutch Baroque; music and its epistemologies from the late 18th century to the present; and 20th- and 21st-century popular music. The Research Group also houses the CMME Project, developing a web-based dynamic interface for early music editions (www.cmme.org). There is a growing and highly diverse population of ca. 25 local and international Research MA and PhD students engaged in research projects ranging from medieval monophony to the cultural and political dynamics of music in the post-9/11 period.

The Department of Media and Culture Studies is currently seeking an

Salary, to be determined in accordance with qualifications and experience, will range from € 3.060,- (column 11 CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten) to € 4.761,- (column 12 CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten) gross per month based on full-time employment.

The holder of the post will teach courses on the BA and MA level and conduct research in the field of Musicology. * Take on various administrative tasks within the BA and MA programmes in Musicology, the Department of Media and Culture Studies, and the Research Group Musicology.

Requirements

* PhD (or equivalent).

* Proven excellence in musicological research, including demonstrably innovatory expertise.

* Outstanding international publication record commensurate with the current stage of the candidate’s career, preferably in (refereed) journals and books.

* Demonstrated visibility within the international musicological research community.

* Evidence of potential as an administrator.

* Ability to work in a team.

* Teaching experience at an appropriate level.

* The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to acquire the Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs (BKO).

The successful candidate will be offered a 2-year contract (renewable, subject to performance review), with the possibility of tenure upon first renewal.
