no, "he doesn't think like an art historian."
his (original) training was as an architect, though he's been "doing"
architectural archeology since i met him in Chartres in 1970.
as i said, he has a good eye for stone, for the details and methods of
building.
unfortunately he, too often, combines these "insights" with poorly reasoned,
historically unfounded (and perhaps unfoundable) hypotheses.
more often than not, the result is a mish-mash of very interesting, original
observations and off-the-wall conclusions.

it has *been* decades since his earliest work (on Chartres) and, to my
uncertain knowledge, the general analytical judgement among established
scholars working in the field is that his work is severely --though perhaps
not always fatally-- flawed.
though he's not above ripping off other people's ideas, he's proved himself to
be pretty much impervious to criticism --even when it has been "constructive"
(and quite often it has not been).
i've never known him to acknowledge an error, either of fact (not infrequent,
in his work), or method, or in his (often quite rash) conclusions.

many thanks for that, i'll take a look, as soon as i can Gird my Loins
sufficiently to put up with his invariably Strangulated (even for an Aussie)
Prose.
