Session Title: Medieval Merchants and Their Manuscripts:
Multidisciplinary Approaches
Organized by: Christina M. Fitzgerald, Anna Dronzek
The purpose of this panel is to bring together three or four scholars
from different disciplines to talk about manuscript ownership by
mercantile readers in the late Middle Ages. Though the organizers work
on late medieval England and largely on vernacular manuscripts, we
welcome papers from any national or cultural area of study, and on any
type of manuscript. Our goal is to open up conversations among
literary scholars, codicologists, historians, and art historians on
the impact and meaning of the greater ownership and readership of
manuscripts by the mercantile classes in the late Middle Ages.
Traditionally, literary scholars and art historians concentrate on the
contents of a manuscript – one the text, the other the illustrations –
while codicologists and historians look at the material object itself.
We are hoping that a panel like ours will encourage scholars to put
all those pieces together, in collaboration or in their own work.
Moreover, we would like to encourage further exploration of the
intellectual culture of medieval merchants as consumers, owners, and
readers of books; too often merchants are examined primarily as
economic or political actors, and their contributions to literary and
book culture in their own age and in its subsequent impact on
generations in the age of print are overlooked.
