If you are a Postgraduate student and interested in gaining some experience
of (primary) school (ab initio) Latin teaching and are in the London area
and here is an opportunity to get involved in a new private enterprise
outreach project (CAGSE - http://www.cagse.com/), with which Lorna Robinson
of the Iris project has links (for her view on bringing Latin into state
schools, with links to the Iris Project, see the BBC Woman's Hour 16/02/07
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/womanshour/02/2007_07_fri.shtml).
Full details of the CAGSE opportunity from the organiser (Dr. Richard Gilder
III) appear below.
I imagine that the method used will be close to that of R. Gilder III, Via
Facilis, which starts by analysing English grammar (in much the same way as
language aptitude tests do) and then moves into Latin (sample chapter one
can viewed at http://www.viafacilis.com/Files/Chapter%201.pdf).

CAGSE(Curriculum Articulation for the Global Support/Subversion of
Education) is a for-profit educational consultancy which promulgates a
number of innovative educational approaches in the UK. One of those
educational projects is the initiation of a Latin program in various
state schools in Tower Hamlet and Newham sections of London, UK, with
a start date of late September or the first week of October.
Basically, CAGSE is looking for teachers for twenty schools. The best
candidates will be postgrad students who want to do field work; who are
interested in the challenging, difficult, and hugely rewarding
opportunity to teach kids from diverse backgrounds - kids who may or
may not be interested in learning the language, but, once they are
confronted with people possessed of superior teaching skills and
passion for subject matter, will be able to take off in ways that
nobody - not the government, not the school, not even the kids
themselves - ever anticipated.
The Latin classes will be in state schools, with a supervisor teacher
present (from the school).
The classes will meet once a week, perhaps two or three.
One of CAGSE's aims is to help schools meet the literacy requirement
imposed recently by the British Government. Latin is a superior
vehicle for the fulfilment of that requirement. We have a curriculum
and experienced personnel who will work with these student teachers in
every aspect of the project: working with the language, working with
the kids, working with the schools. We will be there for the student
teachers every step of the way. I myself will supervise their
training. The curriculum is based on a hands-on, building block
approach to the study of Latin and of Language, with a permeating
flavour of the power of the story as a means to accomplishing that end.
I am working very closely with Sarah Mooney, a professional
storyteller, to this end.
I am in London, UK at the Swiss Cottage Best Western Hotel, tel. #
02077222281. Ask for Dr. Richard Gilder. I can also be reached on my
cell phone: 845-309-5808. The cell is programmed to work internationally.
Very Sincerely Yours,
Ave atque Vale,
