The Respiratory Epidemiology and Public Health Group at the National Heart and Lung Institute wish to appoint an enthusiastic and ambitious statistician wishing to gain experience in an international, multidisciplinary research environment.
Statistical knowledge and skills will need to be applied towards research being undertaken by members of the group into the causes and public health aspects of asthma, allergy and other obstructive lung disease. The post holder will work alongside two other senior statisticians on various research projects. Within each of these projects, the post holder's main responsibility will be data management and statistical analysis. They will also be encouraged to contribute to other elements, including design issues, assisting with fieldwork and the dissemination of results leading to joint authorship in publications of findings.
This post offers the opportunity to join a multidisciplinary team within an active research department and develop skills in international epidemiological research. The group includes clinicians, epidemiologists, medical statisticians, and researchers involved in a variety of projects. The group is involved in a range of international, national and local studies including the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS) (on asthma), the Burden of Lung Disease (BOLD) study (on COPD), the Europrevall study (on food allergies), the Global Allergy and Asthma European Network (GAL2 EN) and the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC).
Applicants must have good skills in data analysis and the use of a major statistical package. Good verbal and written communication skills, analytical and problem solving abilities and proven ability to complete projects and work to deadlines are required. Knowledge of the epidemiology of asthma, experience in assessing associations between exposure and health and some experience of contributing to publications in peer reviewed journals, are desirable but not essential. The duration of this post is for 12 months.
