The field of Ergonomics, or Human Factors Engineering was developed to
address these issues I think. It supports a user centred approach to
design which includes users, consumers and society. Ergonomics as a
discipline was established 60 years ago. I wonder how widespread the
teaching of ergonomics is in design schools?
