Dear All
I thought you might be interested to see version 2 of the museum directory
which I put together as part of the UK Museums on the Web "Mashed Museum"
day.
The original concept was based around a data source of around 380 museums
which I scraped from various sources on the web. Just after the conference,
the 24hr Museum provided me with a CSV of nearly 3,800 UK institutions,
which I've now incorporated into the application.
You can see the directory here:

<http://www.mashedmuseum.org.uk/mm/museumdirectory/24hrmuseum.asp>
The "mashup day" was all about rapid development, distributed data and
consuming/displaying using 3rd party web services. As such, the following
disclaimers apply: this isn't an audience-tested, deeply thought about,
accessible, ready for public consumption or even obviously more useful than
a simple directory listing. Stay calm if your museum isn't on there, has the
wrong address or appears to be located in the middle of the sea...at this
stage this isn't about the integrity of the data but about the ways in which
that data can be displayed, cut up, "mashed".
What we hoped to illustrate is that applications can be built in very short
periods of time by using 3rd party web services - also that you can cut your
data in different ways and get interesting results. In this case, I'm using
Google Maps, Flickr and Yahoo! search. For the record, version 1 took around
7 hours. This second version took an additional 4 hours - all of which was
data cleaning. Version 3 is in the pipeline...
See http://electronicmuseum.wordpress.com/2007/06/22/2-mashed-museum/ for
brief descriptions of the other apps which were built during the day.
Please feel free to email me any comments.
Cheers
Mike Ellis
