ESRC CASE PhD Studentship
Psychological adjustment to the onset of Rheumatoid Arthritis
Applications are invited for an Economic and Social Research Council
Collaborative (CASE) PhD studentship. The studentship forms part of a
multidisciplinary programme of research that has a general focus on disease
progression and comorbidity in Rheumatoid Arthritis, including biomedical,
psychosocial and economic dimensions. The CASE project will focus on
psychosocial and/or health economic dimensions. Of particular interest
would be a project with a focus on the moderating/mediating role of
treatment adherence on the association between depression/psychological
models of illness and future physical and psychological outcomes.
Dr John Done (School of Psychology and the Centre for Life Span and Chronic
Illness Research, University of Hertfordshire) and Prof Adam Young (St.
Albans City Hospital) will supervise the studentship. Prof Young is the
Lead Clinician for two national inception cohorts of patients with
Rheumatoid Arthritis (ERAS & ERAN), data from which has been utilised in the
development of NICE guidelines.
Prospective candidates will need a degree in a relevant area of social /
health / human science, which should include a sound training in
quantitative methods /statistics. Previous research experience and/or an
MSc in a related area are desirable but not mandatory.
Students will receive a maintenance grant in the order of £14,300/pa.
