Dear all,
I have been contemplating how the UK is after 10 years of Blair in
charge.
I know the NHS is hurting, AfC etc. has taken its toll. Local Gov't is
having similar pains due to pay "modernisation". Talking to colleague in
Academia all I hear is pain and anguish.
Curiously morale here in South Wales is lower than after the miners
strike which knocked a big hole in local employment, yet employment is
higher.
It may be of course that I just talk to like minded people, but the
thing that really worries me is the prejudice that has become
institutionalised in the UK. Certain groups are bad regardless of what
they say, even the stupid may have a bright idea worth exploring but now
it appears you have to be on a predetermined message to be considered at
all.
So my questions are does anyone have any idea of a representative survey
of public morale in the UK over the last half century or so. Also do we
have any measure of public tolerance of diversity over the same period?
As a mere bystander to the list and motivated by curiosity rather than
high ideals apart from personal satisfaction, I would be very grateful
if I could be directed to any such studies, and most importantly being
lazy a critique of their methodology.
So over to you all, help please.
Thanks.
Mark
Ps. I was brought up never to criticise an umpire or referee, even if
you thought their decision was wrong. Discuss it with them privately and
quietly. Do not make your discussions public unless the ref agrees. Then
issue a joint statement.
PPS for first time in my life, I found myself agreeing with Lord Levy,
to make peace you need to talk to your enemies, not just your friends.
"Love thine enemy" was a define instruction, hard to do but as an ideal
difficult to gainsay. If these after thoughts have offended anyone
forgive me, I am merely human, and have yet to reach saintly or even
good status.
