SCOTTISH AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE
HEAD OF COMMUNICATIONS
CA\CM\151\07
When one of SAC's laboratories identified a dead swan which became the
first wild bird in the UK to be found with the deadly H5N1 virus we became
the centre of a media storm. As well as animal disease, SAC deals with
agricultural issues including preparing for climate change, animal
breeding, GM crops, organic food and the future of farming. To deal with
these sensitive, challenging and topical issues we are looking for a
dynamic self-starter who has the drive and ambition to lead the
communication strategy for this unique organisation.
Working within the new political environment and with changing priorities
in rural policy, the Head of Communications will provide strong leadership
and guidance to ensure consistent and authoritative interactions with our
complex range of clients and stakeholders and will take the lead in all
aspects of media relations.
This outgoing highly skilled communicator will work together with the
Chief Executive and Principal, the Assistant Principal and senior
research, consultancy and education managers to promote SAC's rich
resources of knowledge and services in agriculture, rural business
management, food chain quality and safety, rural resource management and
the environment. This position will be based in Edinburgh.
The successful candidate will have excellent public relations and media
management skills, preferably combined with an in-depth political
awareness and understanding of the land-based sectors. They will also
have strategic focus, the ability to work under pressure of deadlines and
to take our business forward under times of significant change.
The salary will be in the region of £34,000 per annum.
Application packs are available from Human Resources, Scottish
Agricultural College, West Mains Road, Edinburgh EH9 3JG. Tel: (0131) 535
