medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
This is not precisely my area of expertise, but I am reminded of Joachim
of Fiore, who divided history into the time of the law, of the gospel, and
of the spirit; of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; of Jews, of Christians,
and of contemplatives. The third age was post-millenial, and would be
preceded by the conversion of the Jews. Presumably in the third age,
everybody would live within the holy spirit. However, in terms of
conversion to Christianity from Judaism, most Christian authors defined it
in terms of turning to Christ or to the Church.
I'm intrigued by this notion of 'immersion' in Christiendom. What might
your authors made of Jewish child who was baptized against his will,
placed in a monastery, and subsequently became a monk?
