medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I am currently reading S.J.P. van Dijk and J. Hazelden Walker, The Origins
of the Modern Roman Liturgy: The liturgy of the papal court and the
Franciscan order in the thirteenth century (1960), and was somewhat
surprised to find an elaborate argument to show that the breviary was a
monastic rather than a secular invention, and that the breviary derived from
the noted breviary, rather than vice versa. Are these conclusions generally
accepted? Have there been any detailed discussions or further research on
these points? Can anyone point me to any references?
