ALPSP One-Day Seminar
Publishing and the Library of the Future: What’s Next?
Wednesday 11 July 2007
Venue: St Anthony’s College, 62 Woodstock Road, Oxford, OX2 6JF
Chair: Diana Leitch, Deputy University Librarian (information resources and
academic support), The University of Manchester
This ALPSP seminar looks at what the library will look like in the future,
and how publishers will need to adapt to keep pace with rapid change, not
only to the online content that they provide to their scholarly users, but
to the way they retrieve and deliver it.
It questions how the library as we have come to know it may be transformed.
Will the twin pressures of financial constraints and technological advance
mean a change in the publisher/library relationship? Will the advance of
institutional repositories and open access and other means of delivery alter
and fundamentally change the role of publishers? How will this effect how
they deal with their most important customer? Will the new methods that
researchers use to access the literature and communicate make an important
impact? How will the role of the librarian evolve in an instant access Web
2.0 world?
By presenting the views of how the library might look in the near future
from a practising librarian, society publisher, scientific researcher and
library technology provider, the meeting gives a fascinating insight into
the challenges facing our industry. A panel of speakers and other experts
provides an opportunity for an exchange of views on what the future might
hold.
The seminar will appeal to publishers from both the sales and marketing and
editorial sides of the profession as well as to librarians themselves.
