The Turnitin manuals are quite good for the basics and answer the format
question thus:
"we currently accept submissions in Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, RTF, PDF,
PostScript, plain text, and HTML formats." My understanding is they don't
accept the latest docx format so it needs to be saved as a word doc earlier
than 2007.
Re copyright I think the short answer is that the JISC PAS have had lots of
legal advice on this and there isn't an issue. I'm sure they'd be happy to
expand on that.
Hope that helps
Paul

% Dear All,
%
% When a piece of work is submitted to "Turnitin", I understand that it
% becomes part of the
% database against which other work will be checked. Does this mean there
% are copyright
% issues involved? Is anyone aware of copyright problems with the use of
% Turnitin or
% plagiarism detection software generally?
%
% Second, it is not clear what document styles Turnitin accepts. Word
% documents obviously,
% but do I assume pdf files or LaTeX text files can be checked?
%
% Thank you,
