Snobbism in the extreme. I had no academic association in 2000 when I
began the Serenissima list for Venetian studies on Yahoo groups. Nor do
I have an academic association now. But the membership list of
Serenissima fortunately indicates that the primary scholars in the
field, particularly in art history have had no such qualms, nor,
apparently, do they hesitate to refer their graduate students.
