Eliana was very interesting, and I'm sad I only got to see it once--I
think it could stand more than a couple of viewings. What was
interesting to me about Eliana was not so much the plot or the main
characters (which to be honest I don't remember so well). Much more
interesting to me was the constant level of background information.
As someone that has never been to Indonesia and has desperately wanted
to go for some time (I have a close friend in Bogor), the film
contained an abundance of visual and aural information about Jakarta
that I found fascinating. The story itself was fairly slow, as I
recall, but there was just so much stuff going on in the background
that when the film was over I was sad that it had ended, and I felt
that I would need to watch it three or four times to have a stronger
sense of the world within Jakarta that Eliana inhabited. Does that
make sense?
I will definitely add Opera Jawa and Three Days to my list of films
that I need to see if I ever get the chance. I'd be even more
interested in hearing about some of the films you treasure most from
the past (1960-1985).
Yours,
Jun-Dai
