medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Greetings all,
I´m wondering with those of you who are technological whizzes and up-to-date
on electronic sites could suggest some links where I might find
1) standeard depictions of the soul, in human form, being extracted from the
mouth of the dying person and/or accompanied upward by angels;
2) depictions of the departing soul in the form of a bird (dove); I´d expect
to find this in illustrations of the death of St. Scholastica, or one abbot
Seps in Nursia, both mentioned in the dialogues of Gregory teh great;
3)again from Gregory (or elsewhere), the soul of Theodoric (or, for that matter,
anyone else) being tossed into Mt. Etna (or any other volcano!)
This is not for publication (yet!) but for a lecture, where all links will
be appropriately indicated. Which reminds me that the illustrations need
to be of adequate quality that they can be projected.
Thanks, by the way, to all those who suggested these passages in the first place!
Meg Cormack
