SALARY: £35100 - £38712

DEPARTMENT: Cardiology Dept, Ealing Hospital in
conjunction with Dept of Epidemiology Imperial
College, National Heart and Lung Institute,
Imperial College, and Medical Genetics, Clinical
Pharmacology and Discovery Medicine (CPDM), GSK

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Professors Jaspal S Kooner and Vincent Mooser

Applications are invited for the post of
Post-Doctoral Statistical Genetics Research
Fellow. The appointee will contribute to the
analysis of genome wide association data from the
London Life Sciences Prospective Population
(LOLIPOP) study. The appointee will have
experience in the field of genetic epidemiology,
with a proven track record of publications. The
appointee will be expected to develop a high
quality research programme, under the direction
of the senior LOLIPOP and GSK investigators.

The post will be jointly based in the Department
of Cardiology at Ealing Hospital, and GSK. The
post-holder will collaborate extensively, and
will also hold honorary contracts, with Imperial
College and GSK. The post is funded by an unrestricted grant from GSK.

THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Cardiology has over twenty
staff involved in research into the genetic and
environmental factors underlying complex diseases
including metaboilic syndrome, hypertension,
diabetes and coronary artery disease in UK Indian
Asians and Northern Europeans. The Department is
led by Professor JS Kooner, who is supported by
three Senior Lecturers (Dr John Chambers, Dr
Stuart Rosen, Dr Ranil De Silva). The Department
works in close collaboration with Imperial
College, and in partnership with Pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

The postholder will be based jointly at Ealing
Hospital and GSK, and will also benefit from
close collaboration with the many intellectual
resources of Imperial College, including a wide
range of seminars and lectures, and the advice
and expertise of the National Heart and Lung
Institute, and the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health.

THE PROJECT

Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) mortality is 2-fold
higher in UK Indian Asians than Northern
Europeans, and is not accounted for by recognised
coronary risk factors. The London Life Sciences
Population (LOLIPOP) Research Programme (PIs Prof
JS Kooner, Dr JC Chambers) is an investigation of
30,000 Indian Asians and Europeans. This research
includes a cohort study aimed at identifying
incident coronary heart disease, type-2 diabetes
mellitus, obesity, and chronic kidney disease in
the two populations. To date over 24,000
participants have been recruited and
characterised. Blood samples have been stored and
participants are being followed every 5 years for
cardiovascular and other health events.

Key sub-studies have also been established and include;
i. LOLIPOP Genomics, to identify common genetic
variants underlying susceptibility to complex
traits, including insulin resistance, type-2
diabetes, and atherosclerosis, using whole genome association approaches.
ii. LOLIPOP ‘Omics’, to identify metabolomic,
proteomic and transcriptomic fingerprints linked
with CHD in the two population groups.
iii. LOLIPOP Atherosclerosis, to identify factors
associated with subclinical atherosclerosis, and
its progression, using quantitative markers (EBCT, cIMT).

Genomic, metabolomic and proteomic assays are
being completed as a collaboration between the
LOLIPOP investigators and GSK. 1500 genome wide
association scans have already been completed
using the Affymetrix 500K chip, and a further
1000 scans are expected over the next 6 months.

The results of LOLIPOP and its substudies will
enable identification of factors that contribute
to increased CHD risk amongst Indian Asians, and
help develop effective diagnostic, therapeutic
and preventive strategies for CHD in Indian
Asians that can be readily applied in clinical practice.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

· In collaboration with clinical
researchers, implement a data management system
for genotype and clinical data being collected.
· In collaboration with genomics
researchers, analyse the relationships between
genetic markers and phenotypes (clinical,
metabolomic and proteomic) associated with
atherosclerosis, and other human disease.
· Make a strong contribution to reporting
study results, including writing up for
publication in peer-reviewed journals and
presentations at seminars and conferences
· To plan and carry our research in accordance with the project aims
· To maintain accurate and complete records of all findings
· To present research findings to colleagues and at conferences
· To conduct literature searches and reviews
· To develop contacts and research
collaborations within the Department and wider
academic community in order to further the project aims
· To demonstrate an up to date knowledge
of scientific literature in research area
