Well, Joanna, you have brought up an interesting point - not as clear-cut
negative as you'd expect.
Between England and Australia, you can get travel money to a bona fide
festival or international seminar from the Nation's Arts Council. Now, you
have to plan well in advance - they love their red tape. And you have to
play the game their way, but it is possible.
Now, to make the event - a PoetryEtc PoetryFest - bona fide simply needs a
prestigious organisation to give it the stamp of approval, a multi-national
committee of poets whose names may ring a bell if the assessor is well-read
in contemporary lit, some livable but not expensive accommodation, and a
ground swell of enthusiasm both home and abroad.
A working band of people doing the shit work would need to be formed, too.
We would shamelessly use the names of people among us who are known beyond
their own borders as the public committee, but we would need shitkickers
too, on the ground, picking people up from airports, translating from
English into Australian, doing late night champagne restocks, etc.
It's a dream. Anyone interested in making it happen?
Andrew the Optimist
PS: Spellcheck wanted 'bona fide' to be 'bon fife' - very nice.
