Now that this has become petcetera,I'll throw in my piece. It sounds
like your cats have a fairly common metabolic disorder, name of which
escapes me. Several of my friends have cats so afflicted. They
restrict feedings and sprinkle a medicinal powder on the food, and
they don't allow the sufferer to be in the room when a well cat is
fed. Check it out. It can be serious.
