Thank you for your reply. At present all I know from HR is what the employee mentioned to his manager when he returned to work following sick absence.
He cited 3 reasons for his depression;
1. financial
2. no career progression
3. solder fume and working temperature
Initially, I assumed that maybe he just wasn't happy with his job lot (i.e. he has money problems, there is no chance of career progression at work and work stinks....), but I felt I should look into the solder fume issue anyway.

Check what is meant by "depression". Exposure to the rosin in solder flux
can result in what is termed "central nervous system depression". Could it
be this that your contact is referring to?
