Exploring Music in Wales
Thursday 21 – Sunday 24 June 2007
School of Music, University of Wales, Bangor
The Centre for Advanced Welsh Music Studies holds its eighth conference between
Thursday 21 and Sunday 24 June this year. Sessions will focus on Welsh
traditional music, music in early Welsh culture (including medieval cerdd
dant), music and contemporary popular culture, and Welsh composers of the
twentieth century, although proposals for papers in any area relevant to music
in Wales or Welsh music will be welcomed. There will also be a joint session
with Bangor’s new International Centre for Sacred Music Studies (ICSMuS),
focusing on Interchangeability of Text and Music: metrical psalmody, hymnody
and contemporary bilingual church composition.
A celebratory launch for the Centre’s new bilingual volume, 'Studies in Welsh
Music – Bearers of Song: Essays in honour of Meredydd Evans and Phyllis Kinney'
(published in association with the University of Wales Press) will be held at
lunchtime on Saturday 23 June.
The Centre for Advanced Welsh Music Studies is closely associated with the
School of Music at the University of Wales, Bangor. It exists to coordinate and
develop Welsh musical scholarship, to promote conferences and publications, to
provide written resources in the medium of Welsh and to collaborate with
scholars in other Celtic countries. CAWMS also produces Welsh Music History,
published by the University of Wales Press, the first entirely bilingual
journal devoted to the study of Welsh music and music in Wales.
Offers of papers and further enquiries should be directed to:
