For bishops the case was different and very difficult indeed - at least
in post-Pseudoisidorian canon law. Pseudo-Isidore construed an analogon
between the relation bishop-church and the marital relation between
husband and wife (e.g. second letter of Ps.-Evaristus or second letter
of Ps.-Calixtus). This was eagerly taken up by post-Pseudoisidorian
canonists (cf. e.g. Collectio Anselmo dedicata II,7, the so-called
Ps.-Remedius c. 18, Burchard of Worms I,76, Diversorum patrum sententie
c. 186, etc. up to Gratian C. VII q. 5 c. 10). The replacement of a
living bishop by another was judged by the a.m. canons simply as
adultery - thus a very serious crime.
For abbots I am not aware of any similar sacramental link. Therefore
resignation there was in principle possible. What I am looking for are
concrete cases of such resignations which were rather rare ones, I suppose.
