medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear list-members,
Dear George Brown,
at the "monk-entrance" (in the south transept- thanks to Mr Dillon!) of
the abbey church of Altenberg there was a well with a Salvator-Statuette
pouring water out of his wounds in a basin. So when entering the choir,
all monks could wash their hands to be well prepared for mass (In
Altenberg there was no Fontain-house).
All the Eucharistic vessels have been washed at the piscinas. There are
several piscinas, which are still near the altar in the choir. Some
piscina-fragments wait to get in a dignified lapidarium.
In the Cistercian abbey of Heilsbronn (Near Nürnberg) more than 10
Piscinas still exist. Each of them has got two small basins. The drain
flew outside the church, maybe there were pipes to lead the water under
earth, but they don't exist anymore.
In the Cistercian abbey church of Schulpforta (Near Naumburg), there is
only one piscine in the choir. It also has two small basins.
The Consuetudines of Hirsau explain the using of a double-bowl-fontain.
One bowl was used for washing the Eucharistic vessels the other for
hand-washing.
I hope this is useful for some of you.
Marion Jaklin Latk
P.S. I keep on practising my English, promised!
