Filmmakers can be inspired by whatever they find interesting - gardening,
catholicism, political left, their actors of Freud. It is, of course, valid
to read their products in an appropriate light. But to take, say, gardening
and read ALL films in "gardening key" would be quite ridiculous. Now,
psychoanalysis is one of the major mythologies of our times (unfortunately,
in my opinion). It is almost impossible to read the myth of Sisyphus without
evoking all the nonsense that generations of psychoanalysts have said about
it. All this being said, I still doubt that psychoanalysis gives us any
relevant tools for understanding phenomenon of cinema as such. Of course, if
you want to analyse a film inspired by hiduism, you'd better know something
about hinduism. If you want to say something about a film that is obviously
made under the influence of psychoanalysis - you should know what Freud &
Co. said.
