At North Tyneside we are considering re-evaluating the genre headings we
use for CD and DVD stock. Ideally we would like to encourage customer
browsing by shelving similar types of music and film together. Like many
other authorities I've visited, we currently split music down into jazz,
country, classical, folk, world and a few others, but we are still left
with the vast majority of "popular" music under a catch-all heading which
is no longer really appropriate. Our DVDs are the same, with the bulk of
the stock classified as "Drama and Film" and only broken down further by
certification.
Has anyone on the list gone down the route of using record shop style genre
headings? And if so, which headings did you use, and has it been a
success? I'm happy to summarise and responses I receive for the list.
