Recently, Guy Clark, Joe Ely, John Hiatt, & Lyle Lovett played town
(I'm not sure we've mentioned any of them!?), in a little concert I
missed. I did like one comment from the reviewer, though: "The
songwriting prowess onstage was staggering indeed, but also telling.
Between the four of them, you saw a range of roots music that barely
makes a blip on the commercial radar. Hiatt and Lovett have had
intermittent success; Clark and Ely function as cult artists -- the
direct line between high record sales and poor quality wouldn't be more
apparent if Tim McGraw showed up for a songwriting showdown followed by
a public flogging."
