Always Richard, as solo, w/ Pentagle and long, long before.
> Then, again, you're mixing genres now aren't you: Parker, Taylor, etc...
Yes, but that's always been my way of going: the mix, constant, seamless.
One of the others I should have included was the late, great Lester Bowie:
w/ Brass Fantasy... one minute they're doing "Still of the Night"... the
next
they're ripping through something by Biggie Smalls... Most music's been
ghettoized for far too long. Life's far too brief to compartmentalize
music...
or for that matter, anything else.
lately I've taken up a supreme fascination with the writings (primarily
poetry) of musicians, words written by those making music primarily.
Examples first and foremost, Cecl Taylor, Sun Ra, William Parker,
Steve Swell... making the words of the music, about the music and
on and on. Often, while it's uneven as "poetry", it's stil vital for giving
authentic insight into the head of these musicians.

I will confess I was even a tad sad when news of Frankie Laine's death
came out several weeks back. Got some great recordings of sessions he
cut with Buck Claytton... that swing brought back more memories that
I would say for my money rival those little macaroon cookies triggering
M. Proust into raptures!
