Parsons The New School for Design, one of the largest schools of design in North America, is seeking applicants for a full-time faculty position in fashion and garment design in the Integrated Design Curriculum (IDC), Department of Core Studies. One of two interdisciplinary programs in the department, the IDC is a self-directed design program at Parsons that provides varied yet distinct combinations of study that integrate the design skills and methodologies with a critical awareness.
Opportunity
The position provides an opportunity to take leadership role in the department to direct, teach, and develop curriculum for Body/Garment track in the Integrated Design Curriculum. The Body/Garment track explores the ways that fashion can extend and be informed by other design disciplines such as product design, interior design, fine arts, and design theory & criticism. Specifically, these courses investigate the potential of clothing to innovate through design that addresses performance, function, materiality, technology, semiotics and/or representation.
Position
We are seeking applications from designers with a strong interest and broad perspective on the roles of fashion / garment design / textiles / materials and a demonstrated understanding of their potential relationships with other areas of practice. The position will be directly responsible to develop the interdisciplinary courses and curriculum of the Body /Garment track. The position is also expected to contribute to the development of lectures and public programs that support the curriculum. The position will need to be proactive in its outreach and communication with the related disciplines and areas of the School and University.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will have:
§ An MFA or advanced degree in a related discipline and/or equivalent professional experience;
§ Substantial teaching experience at the college level and a commitment to teaching excellence
§ A demonstrated interest in curricular development
§ Possess a demonstrated record of scholarship and professional activity in fashion, textiles or related areas;
§ Strong skills in the areas of design, concept, theory, and innovation;
§ An international perspective on the history of fashion and contemporary design issues;
§ A developed philosophy of the roles of fashion today, and a demonstrable interest in theory and criticism in the field as well as in the studio;
§ An interest in developing a serious critical, historical, and theoretical dialogue around fashion, and the ability to plan curriculum in these areas;
§ Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills;
§ The ability to help develop the school's critical public programs in this field, both in terms of exhibitions and lecture/seminar programs.
