that the guardian angel is a 'faithful guide', shows up in the liturgy of St. John Chrsysostom, in the completion litany :
'An angel of peace, a faithul guide, a guardian of our souls and bodies, let us ask from the Lord.'
By the way I remember having read somewhere in Erik Peterson (I think in his Fruhkirche, Judentum und Gnosis) that the idea of the personal guardian angel shows up in or around Chrysostom, at the end of the 4th c.
Yes, there is little wonder that Islam has similar ideas, since in the surrounding Judaism and Christianity from where it took many of its theological ideas, this seems to have been prevalent by that time.
