medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I looked at HEJ Cowdrey, Pope Gregory VII (Oxford, 1998), pp. 459-67.
Plus the letters to William in Gregory's Register [ed. Cowdrey, Oxford,
2002]. Letter 23 in Book 7 [p, 353] refers to people murmuring that
Gregory had helped William to a throne by giving support "for the
perpetration of so many homicides."
Stigand is discussed in UR Blumental, The Investiture Controversy
(Philadelphia, 1988), pp. 148-49. Leo IX may have excommunicated
Stigand, but William waited quite a while before seeing him replaced
with Lanfranc.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and
culture
Hi all,
I'm in the middle of taking some classes at Birkbeck at the moment, and
a few questions came up last night which I was hoping the collective
mind of MR might be able to shed some light on... For context, we were
looking at the events of 1066 in England.
1. Does anyone know of a source for the assertion that clerics should
not use bladed weapons, and therefore used maces or similar on
battlefields?
2. Is there any evidence from the Papal side of the Norman assertion
that the Pope approved of his invasion of England?
3. In what contexts would a Pope give a banner to a force, and what
would such a gift mean?
4. What was the status of Archbishop Stigand canonically as an
Archbishop who received his pallium from a deposed Pope, albeit one who
wasn't deposed at the time? In general would he have been considered an
'invalid' incumbent?
5. Is there any special significance in the choice of the feast of the
Holy Innocents for the day to consecrate the Edward the Confessor's St.
Peter's church in Westminster?
6. According to the A-S Chronicle E, the Abbot of Peterborough fought
and was wounded at the Battle of Hastings. How common was it at this
point for clerics to be involved in fighting? Was there anything written
against this?
7. At this point in the 11th C, what access to Classical Latin texts
would be likely for monastic individuals in Britain?
This relates to some discussion on whether the descriptions of
battles given in Chronicles were formulaic based on Classical source,
such as Caesar. There was also some debate over whether there was any
chance that monk who were writing Chronicles etc. would have ever been
at a battle, and thus were always writing from secondary sources.
Thanks for you patience!
Melanie
