Dear all
I am currently investigating the potential for dropping the requirement for potential new members to have to prove their ID. Although there is strong evidence from several authorities that it brings in more new members and hasn't led to a increased loss of stock there is an outstanding issue I'd welcome advice on from those of you who've already gone down this road.
The issue is around the potential for identity theft. For example, if we are contacted by a member of the public who believes someone has masqueraded as them to join the library and borrow and never return items how do we satisfy them that we've taken reasonable steps to protect their identity if we don't ask to see any proof? And indeed elected members who could be concerned at what they may interpret as irresponsible management . I can't imagine this would happen a lot but it only takes one to cause problems and get us adverse publicity. At least now we can say we ask to see some ID and although the system isn't watertight it's better than nothing!
I'd very much welcome your views on this one as it's proving to be a potential stumbling block for us.
Many thanks
Jon Scown
