Information on maps of Thailand available from the Royal Thai Survey
Department.

The Royal Thai Survey Department (RTSD) has its HQ and public sales
counter in Bangkok. It's website is in Thai only, and often uses Thai
rather than Arabic numbers for prices, editions, dates etc. Here are
some links of use should you have a Thai speaker to assist. Luckily the
URL links are in English so you can get a basic idea of what's on any
linked page by pointing your mouse at the link!

The main series of interest to list members (because they are a)
available to the public, and b)blingual) are given below (1:250,000 and
1:50,000 topographic series, Atlas of Thailand sheets), with brief info
on other series (city plans, 1:25,000 topos) at the bottom of the email.

*********************

1:250,000 topographic JOGs

The 250k series are JOGs, series 1501S, bilingual Thai/English and dated
in both Thai and Western chronologies (AD 2007 = Thai year 2550). Dates
are generally in the range 1983-1997. Separate JOG Air and JOG ground
series (1501A, 1501G) are restricted to official use only.

48 of the 52 sheets of series 1501S are available to the public, for
70THB each. The other 4 are unavailable, apparently even to official
users, due to small border disputes with Burma and Laos. These 4 are:
ND47-2 Ye (border dispute is in Three Pagodas Pass), ND48-3 Saravane
(dispute is east of Ubon Ratchathani), NE 47-2 Amphoe Chiang Dao and
NF47-15 Amphoe Mae Chan (dispute is N of Chinag Rai).

Digital files are available, but to official Thai users only.

A downloadable index which also shows the 4 sheets unavailable due to
border disputes is at
http://www.rtsd.mi.th/service/page/06/04Download/index1501/INDEX_1501.zi
p

********************

1:50,000 topographic

The 50k sheets come in 4 series, all on the same sheet grid. There are
830 maps to cover Thailand. All appear to be available as vector files,
raster files and as paper maps. However for non-official Thai users,
only some paper maps are available.

L7017 is a general series with a 1km grid. It is available to Thai
govt/military users only for 40THB/sheet

L7017S is the same maps without the 1km grid and are available to the
public (Thai and foreign) for 80THB each. Only 351 sheets (42%) of the
country is so available, all sheets being well away from any borders,
but even large inland areas are also strangely unavailable.

L7018 and L7108S are similarly WGS84-gridded and non-gridded editions of
military-specification mapping, with accurate contours, better
road/settlement classification, and a style like Australian or US DoD
50k mapping. Again the costs for official Thai users are 40THB/80THB
each, and for the public, 100THB. The public can currently buy 32 sheets
in series L7018S covering the area affected by the 2004 Tsunami. This
includes Phuket and surrounds on the west coast of the Kra isthmus. The
sheets so available
are:
4627-1,2
4727-1,2,3,4
4626-1,2,3
4726-1,2,3,4
4625-1,2
4725-1,2,3,4
4825-1,3,4
4624-1
4724-1,2,4
4824-1,2,3,4
4923-1,4

Compared to L7018/L7018S, the series L7017/L7017S have fewer colours, no
detail as to road surface/width/settlement classification, and less
accurately drawn contours, etc. All serries do have lat/long marked in
each corner.

As with the JOG series above, All four of the 50k series have 7 sheets
that are pretty much completely unavailable due to border disputes.
These sheets are
1) Three Pagodas Pass with Burma (1 sheet 4639-I),
2) the northern section of the Thai/Burma border(4 sheets - 4849-II,
*4848-IV, 4748-I and 4748-II), 3) the Thai/Lao border east of Ubon
Ratchathani (1 sheet 6039-II) and
4) The Thai-Lao border near Loei/Nan (1 sheet, *5144-II)
The two sheets I have marked * above, strangely, do not follow through
to make the covering 250k JOG sheet unavailable. Perhaps the disputed
area is too small at 250k scale.

An index for all 4 series is at:
http://www.rtsd.mi.th/service/page/06/04Download/L7017data_index/index_p
aper_L7017s.zip
It shows in green the sheets of L7017S available to the public, and in
red the 7 sheets from all 4 series that are unavailable due to border
disputes. The remaining sheets, in white, can only be obtained by Thai
officials. If you want to mark in available L7018S sheets, you will need
to do this yourself.

Atlas of Thailand sheets

The 52 individual sheets from the ATLAS OF THAILAND are also available.
Several have been updated in the last 10 years, so the online RTSD
catalogue and the samples at the RTSD shop are older editions listed/on
display. All have bilingual titles/legends in Thai/English. Sheets come
in two sizes: a larger size with a map of Thailand at 1:2,500,000 and a
smaller size at 1:4,000,000. Some sheets, mainly the smaller ones, have
multiple maps at smaller scales again, and are indicated by (x6) etc
after the scale. The sheet list below has been taken from the RTSD
website (URL http://www.rtsd.mi.th/service/page/03/3_1/atlas.html and
http://www.rtsd.mi.th/service/page/03/3_1/atlas_1.html ) and
updated/corrected with regards to date, scale, etc for most sheets.
Those sheets marked * indicate I have not updated/corrected the
information, so date and scale may be wrong. Where two page numbers are
given, the map is the second o these. I presume the first of these
pairings is text, but am not sure.

Sheets should be ordered by page number not ordinal number!

Atlas of Thailand sheets available. Cost 60THB each.
