THE CULT OF MARIA LIONZA AND VENEZUELAN IDENTITIES
Illustrated talk by Barbara Placido
Thursday 15 February, 7pm
The cult of Marķa Lionza is one of the largest cultural and religious phenomena in modern Venezuela. It is a fascinating blend of African, Indian and Catholic beliefs similar to the Caribbean Santerķa and has followers in every layer of Venezuelan society from small rural villages to the modern capital of Caracas. This illustrated talk will introduce the rites and icons of the cult and ask how it contributes to the mixed cultural and national identities of Venezuela today.

FAITH SEEKING TRANSFORMATION
Talk by Dr. Michael Kirwan
Tuesday 20 February, 7pm
Forty years ago, Latin America gave birth to one of the most dramatic religious movements of modern times, the Theology of Liberation. In Peru, Uruguay and above all Brazil, pastors, academic theologians and ordinary lay Christians proclaimed a new way of relating religious faith and transformative politics - one which aroused suspicion and even bitter opposition, both in the Vatican and in neoconservative political circles in the States and elsewhere. Much of the theological energy and productiveness has dissipated, for various reasons, but the legacy lives on, not least in a current generation of politicians who have been influenced by this style of 'faith seeking transformation'. This talk will give an overview of Liberation Theology: its past and future, 'ayer' and 'manana'. Dr. Kirwan is Head of Theology at Heythrop College.

BODIES, SOULS AND CONVERSION TO CHRISTIANITY IN THE ANDES
Talk by Dr. Gabriela Ramos
Thursday 22 February, 7pm
In ancient Peru, a significant part of religious life revolved around the cult of the dead. Since the Spanish conquest and colonization of Peru had as its major goal the conversion of the indigenous population to Christianity, the transformation of indigenous ideas and practices about death was at the core of the Spanish colonial endeavour. In this talk we will explore this fundamental aspect of Andean cultural history. Dr. Ramos is Lecturer of Latin American History in the Faculty of History at Cambridge University.
