For question 1., on the use of mace, please see David Bates's article "The
Character and Career of Odo, Bishop of Bayeux (1049/50-1097) in Speculum L
(1975):1-20. Basically, Bates claims that the use of mace in episcopal
hands in the Bayeux Tapestry indicates a sumbol of power rather than any
actual participation in fighting.
