Hard to say for sure, and the Moodle.org Forums are definitely the best place to get help with this kind of thing; but I'd guess MSSQL is more the issue than PHP. The vast majority of Moodle installations are still on Mysql, often I think becaue they gave up, after stumbling on problems when trying to install with some other DBMS. You could try installing MySQL and then repeat your Moodle install with that to at least isolate your issue to MSSQL; and then decide how important it is to use your preferred database setup. You could also try the PHP upgrade if you've not already got loads of stuff running under your current version: it's probably not that complex to upgrade.

Subject: [VLES] Moodle on MSSQL error
Hi all,
I'm using the latest Moodle build (1.7) with PHP 5.1.4 and Apache on a Windows 2003 server running MSSQL 2005. The initial installation went well (install.php) but after I accept the GPL licence and the /admin/index.php page is shown for the first time, the error 'A problem occurred inserting current version into databases' is shown. Looking at the database all the tables have been created and the database user is owner of the db. I don't think this is a permissions problem. According to the Moodle forums this error has been seen on Linux and using Mysql but unfortunately the fix was upgrade the version of PHP 5.1.4 which I've been using all along. Can anyone shed any light on this error?
Many thanks
Steven Wood
