Ethel and all,
A couple of years ago, Designer, curator and educator Daniel Charny and Architect Asa Bruno created a conceptual programme and architectural brief for the first Israeli Design Museum, currently under construction. The work on the programme included an in depth investigation of the leading design museums in Europe and north america, including interviews with chief curators and managers of these institutions. Part of the programme was the creation of criteria according to which these museums could be defined, and axis along which they ould be placed; eg. historical orientation, educational, collection centered, industry-fine art, scientific-commercial and many more. They then created a series of graphs that mapped these institutions and allowed for a comparative analysis of different approaches to exhibiting design. This fascinating work facilitated some clear and precise definitions of the subjects that the Israeli museum should focus on.
The programme has not been made public, although parts of it where described in a blueprint magazine article (issue # ?) and in various lectures. People who are interested may contact me off-list and I will help them contact the writers to request access to the programme.
best wishes from Jerusalem, home of home of dreamy poets, curious designers and sleazy politicians,
Ido Bruno

Subject: design museums
I am a Brazilian design history researcher and I writing on design=20
museology and expography.
I would like to ask for some help in finding an overview on design=20
museums and on design museums chronology.
As I know, we can consider Sir H. Cole's South Kensington as the first=20
Design Museum.
If we don't consider French Arts D=E9coratives or Art & Industry Museums,=
=20
we could say that Cooper Hewitt was the second institution so-called=20
Design Museum?
I will appreciate if anyone of this list could help me finding some good=20
bibliography on this issue.
Best regards
Ethel Leon
