I don't think that was what I said
I did say that if designers are to engage in research it would be
helpful if they developed approaches to research that exploit their
professional knowledge, skills and experience. That would be entirely
unremarkable in Engineering or Education or Agriculture so I find it
strange that we are talking about pure researchers as a separate breed
who study designers. That implies that designers are incapable of
becoming mature academics without casting off their professional self.
As I work with several excellent researchers who are achieving this
fusion of professional practice with research practice at both PhD and
post-doctoral levels I am confident that it is a valid approach. It is
the foundation for our research policy for design here in Sheffield and
has been since 1993.
