SUBJECT: Google Books Library Project (Beta)
Google have recently launched a beta version of a new service called:
http://books.google.com/
While they have not yet decided to scan printed music, there are many
useful text books and catalogues that include musical topics. The majority
of volumes provided to date are nineteenth century.
What makes this service particularly useful is
(a) you can download and print material for which copyright has expired
[this may depend on the domain of your country and depend on local
copyright laws]
(b) each book's page has been treated with an advanced optical character
recognition, resulting in an extensive search database in various scripts
besides Roman.
Before you search you should select the radio button 'Full view books' to
produce complete copies. It is also possible to purchase certain books
through online publishers. While this project has already attracted
controversy, it will bring many benefits to scholars (such as reduced
degradation upon fragile books and might reduce the need to travel to
foreign libraries).
You are most welcome to forward this to other interested scholars.
Yours sincerely,
Peter J D Scott
