medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Marjorie Greene <[log in to unmask]>
> All the great photo URLs for the Magi reminded me of a lovely little
tympanum in Pontaubert (Yonne) depicting the Virgin Enthroned with the Magi in
attendance.
> Le Ministère de la Culture a créé une base mémoire appelée Base
Mérimée qui regroupe tout ce qui est classé « Monument historique » en
France.
>Cette base est consultable sur internet à l’adresse suivante :
http://www.culture.gouv.fr/documentation/merimee/accueil.htm
> Il y a bien sûr un moteur de recherches interne : en tapant « pontaubert
», je suis arrivé sur le page suivante :

this detail

is a photograph taken by the great French Architectural historian, Eugène
Lefèvre-Pontalis, probably c. 1910 or so.
these Ministree de Kulture database sites
http://www.culture.gouv.fr/culture/bdd/index.html
are full of sometimes quite marvelous old photos (this one is only mediocre in
quality).
note the "base Mémoire" caption --that's the larger DB of the same name, to
be found here:
http://www.culture.gouv.fr/documentation/memoire/pres.htm
with 600,000 photos (as opposed to Mérimé's mere 160,00) it is surely one of
the largest on the web.
in any event, the Pontaubert Virgin has a wonderful "folk culture" quality to
her, with her enlarged head and Super-Sized crown.
the Gothic Style, come to Burgundy, c. 1220s or so, i should think.
