Subject: searching for a graduate student
I recently learned that a proposal has been recommended for funding,
which would provide a part-time RA as well as summer support for a
graduate student; the remainder of support would be supplied by a TA.
This is an unusual project. It is collaborative research, and the
student would be involved in detailed characterization of the spatial
variation in physical properties of sedimentary rocks, including
hydrologic properties such as permeability, and relating this
variation to the location of fractures formed in deformation
experiments (which will be done by my collaborator and his group).
Field work would be minimal, although it could be extended somewhat
to meet a specific student's interest. Thus, I'm looking for the
usual 'good student', but need someone who is not only willing to
work on a project that involves detailed hydrologic as well as
structural characterization, but also can interface with workers at
another institution. The student would also need to be willing to
learn to use an SEM and a minipermeameter. The work could constitute
an M.S. or be built into a Ph.D.
Because I learned of funding at a relatively late date, we have
already passed our official application deadline of Jan. 3. However,
students will not be evaluated for funding until late January, and a
'late' application will not bias the evaluation committee. If you
know of an appropriate student who is interested in grad school, but
has not applied to UW, please give him or her a nudge in my
direction. An interested student should feel free to call or e-mail
for more details. I'd like to start a student in the Fall, but could
take someone on as early as June or as late as January.
I also have funding for a more field intensive project that targets
deformation of sed rocks, and has a lab component as well. I've been
able to pass the word about this project more effectively, but it
would be great to deepen the pool of applicants.
Thanks for your help in getting the word out.
