For UK Users
I am pleased to be able to update Julian's message to report that the
other labs in the North West SHA have now agreed to aim for a changeover
in April. We acknowledge that this may be challenge for some,
particularly if they need to change their units for paracetamol which
will involve changing care pathways. However it is not anticipated that
there will be many who extend beyond this, or by very long. Since we
are suggesting April as a start date for the change, how about agreeing
on a date by which it will be completed across the UK?
We have produced a table for labs to use to support the change, which I
attach. Comments on this are welcome.
Best wishes

Dear Colleagues
For UK users only
I would like to raise the issue of standardising the use of reporting
units for drugs and poisons. As you know, the consensus document from
the ACP, ACB, RCPath, UK Poisons service and the IATDMCT stated that a
uniform et of units across the nation would improve patient care and
reduce the risk of errors. The document also proposed the use of SI
mass
units.
There has been no serious objection to this policy either in response
to the article in ACB News
http://www.acbwm.org.uk/ACBNews/2006/october2006.pdf
or my mailings on the mailbase.
This policy has been adopted by Scotland and Greater Manchester with a
proposed change over date of April 2nd 2007. Could I suggest that all
laboratories make this change on the same date.
Yours hopefully
Julian
